Range Anxiety Solved Through Strength In Community. Can Someone Please Tell Jeremy Clarkson?

The PlugSurfing website and free app will overcome range anxiety.
London, New York, United Kingdom (sardnews.org) 16/09/2011
London, 16th September 2011: Armed with a smartphone, PC or tablet, an electric vehicle driver will no longer need to fear the anxious prospect of running out of electricity. Instead, as soon as the power gets low, finding a charging point will now be as easy as using a GPS navigation system. With a unique community approach, PlugSurfing will have the biggest and most up-to-date database of charging points in Europe. As well as public plugs, it will also display the private plugs installed in the homes and garages of our members, the ‘PlugSurfers’, and shared by them through our app and web service. Users will be able to check any charging point’s availability, chat with the owner before using it and rate the service they have received. All whilst building friendships and keeping the wheels of the EV revolution turning towards a greener future.

There are currently 3000 electric cars on Britain’s roads, predictions of 8,600 by the end of the year and targets of 2 million by 2020. Add to this the number of electric bikes and scooters and it’s not hard to see why the electric vehicle, once spoken of as being ‘dead’, is now back with a vengeance. 2011 has seen electric cars being designed by major car manufacturers and David Cameron is so eager to promote the vehicles that, even amid the culture of cuts, he is offering £5,000 grants to tempt potential buyers and help fulfil his prophecy of the ‘greenest government ever’.

There is, however, a problem that threatens to stop the dream becoming a reality. With a range of only approximately 100 miles on a full battery, EVs require frequent charging; and yet two-thirds of towns in the UK with a population of over 150,000 do not have any public charging points. For many, the luxury of a personal charging station will also only ever be a pipe dream: A report by consultants Frost and Sullivan has revealed that installing a charging point would cost into the thousands, and such points would not be practical for city dwellers without private parking spaces. With PlugSurfing, however, so-called ‘range anxiety’, the fear of not being able to charge up when you need to, is set to be a thing of the past. This is great news for the two-thirds of the population who state the lack of charging stations as the reason preventing them from buying an electric vehicle. And, of course, it will surely be brilliant news for those who fear suffering a similar fate to Jeremy Clarkson, who was stranded in Lincoln on a recent episode of Top Gear when his electric car battery ran out of power. Should he embark on such a voyage again, he will no doubt not leave home without access to the PlugSurfing community!

App and Website Released Early Due to Overwhelming Support from Apple and iTunes

Originally scheduled for a late September official launch, we are delighted to announce that the PlugSurfing website and iPhone app will now be launched in early September due to overwhelming support from Apple and iTunes. As a company leading the way in innovation and new technologies, Apple were so impressed with our product that they immediately started to heavily promote the beta version of our app within iTunes. Pleasantly surprised and grateful for this support, we have now been working day and night to bring the official launch forward to Thursday 15th September 2011.

About PlugSurfing

PlugSurfing is a community based project that aims to connect electric vehicle owners and drivers with charging points. Thought up by a group of electric vehicle enthusiasts, the idea managed to become a reality when they found financial backing from private investors sharing the same values of striving for a cleaner future. By means of helping to jump start the ‘electric vehicle revolution’, the service encourages owners of charging points to share their plugs with registered community members through an interactive website and smartphone app. The aim is to help overcome the poor charging infrastructure in the

UK and promote cleaner transport, carbon reduction, e-mobility and the strength of the community. Central to our ideas is the sentiment that if we all work together, we can make anything happen. We cherish the thoughts and contributions of our users and encourage you to get in touch if you have any further questions or comments.
