Insurance May Cover Nose Job

You may be eligible for full or partial coverage of the procedure
Newport Beach, CA, United States of America (sardnews.org) 21/07/2011
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a popular cosmetic procedure and California is a prime locale. In 2009, 26% of all rhinoplasties nationwide were performed in the Golden State. This percentage represents nearly 67,000 procedures. What’s more, a nose job from a board certified plastic surgeon can cost thousands of dollars, and much of this may be out of pocket expenses. There may be a solution however; the same insurance company that pays for your regular medical expenses may cover your nose job as well.

It is easy to forget that plastic surgeons are just that: surgeons. While they may have specialized training in cosmetic technique, they can still perform other types of healing such as corrective methods. It is important to distinguish between procedures performed by a plastic surgeon and there are two: cosmetic and reconstructive. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Recommended Insurance Codes, the definition of a cosmetic or elective procedure is “surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem.” Because purely cosmetic procedures are elective in nature and are done only for the sake of esteem and appearance, they are generally not covered by any third party carrier.

The accepted ASPS definition of a reconstructive procedure is “surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.” Because a reconstructive procedure involves improving the functionality of the nose and airway, it may qualify as a covered medical expense, even if appearance is indeed improved during the nasal reconstruction.

During this tough economy, even insurance carriers are finding ways to save money. But if a patient is having a nose job ( http://www.orangecountynosejob.com ) out of medical necessity, insurance may help defray the expense even if it does make a patient look better in the long run.
