NYC Surgeon Highlights Teardrop Breast Implants’ Incredibly Natural LookFeatured PR

New York plastic surgeon Dr. Mark D. Epstein highly recommends the teardrop-shaped implant for his patients over the more popular, but less natural-looking, round implant shape.

For decades, round-shaped implants have been preferred over their teardrop-shaped counterparts, as patients fear that the teardrop shape lacks fullness and volume at the top. However, New York-based plastic surgeon Dr. Mark D. Epstein points out that these assumptions couldn't be more off base.

Teardrop, or anatomical, implants get their name from their more bottom-heavy form. Due to their teardrop shape, they contain greater fullness in their lower half, which makes them closely resemble the silhouette and slope of natural breasts, explains Dr. Epstein, who practices at the Center for Aesthetic Surgery, located in Stony Brook, NY.

To demonstrate how teardrop implants mimic real breasts, Dr. Epstein compared a round saline implant and a teardrop-shaped implant side to side. Both were filled to the manufacturer's specification and held in the palm of the hand, which simulates how they sit within the breast of a standing person. The top tip of the round implant collapsed and was less prominent than the top portion of the anatomical implant.

"I have a very definite opinion here: I strongly believe that an anatomical saline implant will produce a more natural result than a round saline implant," Dr. Epstein says.

He goes on the explain that those who believe that the round implant offers more upper fullness are not taking into consideration the true factors that may be causing this full appearance. When the selected implant is too large for a person's breast tissue, or if the implant is overfilled, it becomes tense and retains its upper fullness. In these instances, the patient risks experiencing implant shape distortion and discomfort resulting from not having the right sized implant.

Previously, patients' choices were limited when it came to selecting anatomical implants, as only saline implants had the option of being teardrop-shaped. That's recently changed, with the FDA approving Natrelle's teardrop silicone gel implant last winter, and Mentor's MemoryShape silicone-gel anatomical implants were approved by the FDA this past summer.

Dr. Epstein also notes that silicone gel implants are less firm than saline implants, which helps the breasts to retain their natural shape tendency following surgery.
