Kathleen Albertson, L. Ac, PhD, a well known California Acupuncturist and herbalist was invited by UC, Irvine Healthcare’s H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center to discuss how Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine benefits patient care.

“She is the author of “Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women’s Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine. She stated, “The better we inform our patients on the benefits of uniting Western and Eastern medicine, the better patient health care will be.”

Dr. Albertson also holds PhD in Holistic Nutrition. “Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) includes acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is often undervalued and underutilized in gastro- intestinal issues when in fact its use has proven to show significant results, improving patient care.”

Dr. Albertson reviewed how stress is a major precursor to many intestinal problems as common as constipation or diarrhea or for more complicated diagnoses like Chron’s disease, IBS, or ulcerative colitis. She discussed how research supports the use of TCM as part of the patient’s treatment plan.

She stated, “The brain and nervous system becomes imbalanced by stress and overacts on the stomach and digestive system. This creates a domino effect of problems from pain, and inflammation to immune issues. Integrating TCM as part of patient care reduces the side effects of western medications and in many cases resolves symptoms. TCM calms the nervous system affecting both physical and emotional health. We see better outcomes when patients integrate Western and Eastern protocols. TCM, also widely recognized for reducing stress, benefits many of the emotional components associated with bowel problems---emotions such as depression, shame, and anger. Even patients who have had surgical procedures feel better and many insurance companies now cover acupuncture treatments.”
