Borneo offers excitement, thrills and candy for the eyes with so much wildlife and varying lifestyles of the native peoples.
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia (sardnews.org) 18/10/2011
Borneo is the largest island just outside Greenland and New Guinea. It is made up of three countries: Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia. It is an island filled with the wonders of nature and protected animal species. Headhunting has only recently ceased and you can still see evidence of past headhunting when you tour Borneo’s villages.

Borneo is famous for so much more than headhunting. The jungles of Borneo have miles of undisturbed rainforest. Much of the rainforest is now a part of national parks with diverse plant and wildlife in great abundance. Orangutans, Probiscis monkeys, sea eagles, elephants, macaques, egrets and hornbills can be found in their natural habitats and is protected areas. Watch the monkeys swing from tree to tree and take swims dodging crocodiles in rivers.

Borneo tours include very active tours that include mountain climbing, diving, white water rafting and hiking through the world’s most beautiful flora and fauna. Borneo is quickly getting the reputation of being a great area for diving with its reefs of the coast of Miri, Lakayan and off the coast of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea. There’s also Layang Layang in the South China Sea and the Derawan and Sangalaki area of the North-East coast of Kalimantan. These are now included in the premiere diving areas in the Asian region.

If you’re not into the very active lifestyle, perhaps you’ll enjoy taking photos using your telephoto lens. Truly spectacular photos can be had of the native lifestyle in Borneo. The longboats and longhouses, the former lifestyle as headhunters and the massive numbers of wildlife all present great photo opportunities.

For nature lovers, borneo eco tours available include bird and butterfly tours. Other examples of borneo eco tours include a strenuous hike up Mount Kinabalu, a two day climb for the reasonably fit person. No special equipment is needed, just good strong lungs and legs and warm clothing as it gets cold on top of the mountain. When you reach the summit you can see all the way to the Philippines. If climbing doesn ‘t get your adrenaline rushing maybe descending to the depths below the caves of Mulu will. Indeed, the whole island is comprised of ecological mysteries.

Borneo offers so much to the visitor in the way of wonder and awe. Borneo holidays can be designed around what interests you have in your environment. Whether you are active or sedentary, a tour specialist can design the vacation of your dreams just by describing how you want to spend your time. Borneo offers excitement, thrills and candy for the eyes with so much wildlife and varying lifestyles of the native peoples. Borneo holidays can be a slice of life that leaves you breathless and wanting more from the strange world down under.
