The rare animal carries a high value as a gem or piece of jewelry for many.

Leading Hawaii resort, Royal Lahaina hotel recently created an article entitled "Hawaii Black Coral - An Island Treasure" to highlight the value of the animal as a gem. Black coral actually exists at a number of different places around the globe. Hawaii is currently home to 14 of 150 different species of the coral.

The animal is actually very difficult to find or see. Some black corals exist in shallower depths of water - under 20 feet. However, those corals are not highly valued. The black coral most individuals value is found at depths of 200 feet or greater, making it very difficult to obtain. Adding to that difficulty is the fact that most local governments regulate black coral collections.

Interestingly, black coral is in fact a carnivorous animal, feeding on plankton that passes by through the ocean's currents. It grows at a rate of 2 inches per year, and lives anywhere from 15 to 50 years. In its natural environment, it can be found growing in a fan-like pattern, or similar to the branches of a tree.

Individuals interested in all inclusive Hawaii vacation packages probably won't get the chance to see black corals growing in their natural environment, but because of its value as a piece of jewelry, many of the local specialty shops carry black coral products.

Individuals interested in purchasing native Hawaiian black corals are recommended to call Royal Lahaina Resort at 800-222-5642.

About The Royal Lahaina Resort

The article is called “You Haven't Been To Hawaii If You Haven't Been To a Luau!” and it charts the history of the luau—from its beginnings to the celebrations often held to this day. One of the topics the article covers is all of the different types of food found at a luau. This section was included to show that while the modern luau has changed much from early days there are still familiar dishes available that are prepared in the classic way.
