There is a very serious bed bugs problem in London hotels, so it's essential that you put into place a commercial pest control programme if you are a hotel or guesthouse owner in London.

Following a vast increase in the number of tourists to the capital over the summer, the problem of bed bugs is on the rise. With the London Olympics, the Paralympics and Queen's Jubilee not only did people bring bed bugs to London's hotels from all over the globe, tourism as been given a real boost which has had a knock on effect over the coming months and throughout the winter. Although this is great news for the UK tourist industry including hotels, restaurants, theatres, guesthouses and other entertainment venues, it's not great news for hotels suffering from an increase in cases of bed bugs.

For those who stay in an infested hotel or guesthouse, the chances are that they will end up taking these pests home with them as they stowaway in guest's clothes and in their suitcase. This means that people could infest their home as well as having suffered in the hotel they stayed at, and can then carry these bed bugs with them into other venues closer to home.

For a hotel owner, it's essential that they have a commercial pest control plan to tackle the increasing numbers of bed bugs. This could include getting a free valuation, advice and education on what to look out for. Bed bugs in your business can affect your reputation and profits and some businesses never fully recover. All it takes is one bad review on Trip Advisor or other similar review sites and you could find that your bookings plummet.

Akeel Jaffar runs HLA Pest Control in London, who specialises in bed bug infestations in hotels and guest houses and can help businesses put in place a commercial pest control strategy to tackle a problem before it gets out of hand. They offer advice to hotels and businesses in London to help tackle the rise following the events of summer 2012. HLA Pest Control has seen a 25% increase in call outs for the last three months compared to the same period in 2011. Akeel Jaffar says:

"Hotels need to carry out regular checks in their hotel room and especially around the bed area to ensure that they look for signs of bed bugs. Proprietors need to look out for little black dots, which are the faeces of the bed bugs, shed skin under the bed and small marks on the bed where guests have rolled over and crushed bed bugs that have fed. We offer a consultation to help you understand what to look for, and how they can spread from room to room. Check the creases in mattress, any gaps that are visible in the headboard or any cracks between the skirting boards and walls. If you do see any evidence of bed bugs, make sure you wash all bedding at above 50 degrees and call a reputable pest control company for treatment and advice to prevent a return of the problem."
